RED LONDON is an Oi! band formed in Sunderland late 1979, influenced by The Clash, Angelic Upstarts and The Jam. The band named themselves after a Sham 69 song. By 1983 they were signed to Razor Records. Their first release was the “Sten Guns in Sunderland” EP in 1983 followed by the “This is England” LP in 1984. Since then they have recorded for various labels both in the UK and abroad, and toured Europe including Germany, Poland, Belgium, Holland, France, Italy, and Spain as well as playing occasional gigs in England. Nowadays the band play some concerts from time to time. The release we have here was made by the label "Step-1" and include the first EP plus the debut LP. Is probably the best known work of the band, but Red London made more albums very recommended and always combining Oi! music with melodic voices and political lyrics. The four members declared themselves as socialist, libertarian and internationalist, inspired by the british SWP. Record label called "RedStar 73" has made the first re-issue on vinyl format and If somebody wants to buy it can go HERE. Later in 2016 was a new re-issue with remastered sound and some changes in the artwork made through italian label "Radiation Ressiues" just on LP format. Red London disbanded in 2002 and reformed in 2018 touring around UK and Europe.

Unfortunately we can not get a better recording than this of "Pride & Passion", but you can appreciatte also the very good quality of sound and lyrics. Punk rock very melodic and calm, but not at all commercial. Nowadays is quite difficult to find this work, but maybe you can buy it in the german label "Mad Butcher Records", here there is the direct link in case you are interested about it. Recorded at Teesbeat Studio, Stockton, Cleveland, England in october 1988.  LP comes with 10"x7" 8 page booklet.Nowadays is very difficult to find copies of this album, maybe in E-bay in CD format and a few very expensive vinyls. Musically the band turned perhaps closer to hard rock or simply classic rock, with some typical oi! songs of course.

Label:    Knock Out
Format:    CD , LP
Tracks:    10
Time:    30 min.
Genre:    rock
Style:             Oi!

This is one of the most unknown RED LONDON discs, and therefore also most underrated. But after several listens we can safely say that the album has very good sound quality and maybe more punk, stronger and faster than the previous album "Outlaws" which sounded pretty rock'n'roll. RED LONDON is a band that for many years has been more popular in other countries than their own. The German case is very clear, where they have played many tours and concerts and also where many labels have made and distributed albums of the band. Here is the case of "Knout Out Records" where you can still buy this album on vinyl.

"Days like these"
Year:    1997
Label:    Cargo
Format:    CD , LP
Tracks:    12
Time:    34 min.
Genre:    rock
Style:             Oi!

And it was time to write about the RED LONDON disc entitled "Days like these". It was initially made by German label "Knock Out Records" and years later by the British label "Cargo Records." Currently I think it is quite difficult to buy physical copies of this album on CD or LP format. Personally I think it is not a bad album, not at all, but I think it is less than the original RED LONDON entire discography. The band has recorded albums with other higher quality as "Once Upon A Generation" (in my opinion the best), "Pride & Passion" or even the debut "This is England". Despite this, the album is not bad and continues the same musical line ever: melody, oi! and punk-rock.

"Downtown riot"
Year:    1997
Label:    Combat
Format:    CD
Tracks:    5
Time:    15 min.
Genre:    rock
Style:             Oi!

One more to collection, RED LONDON is a band which walk slowly but which never stop, and from time to time made a good recording for its public. This is an EP made and distribute by one interesting label based in the french region where punk rock is more popular: Bretagne. There exists a lot of bands, collectives, radio-shows, labels, etc. I had the chance to buy this EP directly to "Combat Records" and the only one negative point that is so much short, only 3 tracks plus The Clash cover "Janie Jones". But the quality sound is excellent and the guys of RED LONDON play fast and dynamic.

"once upon a generation"
Year:    1999
Label:    Knock out
Format:    CD , LP , Picture disk
Tracks:    12
Time:    36 min.
Genre:    rock
Style:             Oi!

For me this is one of the best albums of RED LONDON in many aspects: composition, lyrics, sound, etc.. The sound is less influenced by the rock'n'roll and the whole album sounds more punk, more 1977 addition there are songs that have become true "hits" as. "All the skinhead girls", a great track that many people know. The "This is England" and this "Once upon a generation" could be the 2 best jobs RED LONDON. As anecdote to mention that the german label "Knock Out Rec." made the normal edition in CD format but also a limited edition in picture vinyl disk very awesome (you can see the pic here below).

Red Londing is since 1979 active and integral part of the international punk scene. Since Petty Smith had left the band for family reasons, so to speak, is Steve "Cast Iron" Smith, the new lead singer. And he's doing really well. It has the sound and the songwriting of Red London done really well. The sound sounds as if Red London actually always wanted to work with Steve. The Steve merrily sings at the Sunderland clan around Red London, Red Alert, Redskins and Angelic Upstarts is active band seems no harm. So Gaz is now playing bass in the current line-up of the Angelic Upstarts. It's all a big community and forever punk. Red London disbanded in 2002, but reformed again in 2018 touring around UK, Europe and USA.
