Mourmansk150 clearly revel in confusion. They are undeniably a power electronics act–although over their twenty-odd years of existence they have worked up and down the spectrum of industrial sounds–and employ familiar techniques and motifs from the genre. Yet, this album is anything but a typical genre study. Take the cover art, for example: a child’s drawing of what appears to be a torture chamber, with two hapless individuals being tormented by a dog (naturally). I recall having similar thoughts the first time I heard Illusion of Safety some ten years ago. It was recognisably a strong release of industrial music, but there was something not quite right about it, and in all the right ways. It challenged my assumptions and broadened my tastes. "Achieving nothing, assuming everything" provides a similar aural dissonance, and shows a band confident in a defiantly DIY approach. This may be in part due to their lengthy stretch of activity; perhaps they cut their teeth early and are restless for experimentation. I don’t doubt that it’s also thanks to a healthy disdain for authority in any guise and the herd mentality it can engender. In one interview, they ruefully dismiss the suggestion that they hold Anarchist politics, instead asserting an outright rejection of all authority, no matter the persuasion. While I don’t speak French and am unable to decipher much of the content, the English liner notes in Achieving Nothing / Assuming Everything also speak of a clear disgust with capitalist pursuits. Regardless of their politics (or otherwise), a violent political or social agenda resonates in the music itself. There’s an urgency and directness that speaks of unrest; of barricades and blockades, Molotov cocktails and dissent. There are one or two tracks that move at a more maudlin pace, but on the whole, the album rolls along at a cracking pace.

Standout tracks are those where razor sharp synth lines play against gruff, muffled shouts; nothing ground-breaking to be sure, but there’s a freshness and authenticity in their delivery that sets them apart from other acts serving up similar fair. Fine examples include “Le Detonation” which hits like a street fight: fast, messy and brutal. “Les Aboiements Des Chiens” flings woozy vibrato synth under urgent vocals from two band members, dialogue style. These and other highlights on the album are simple, straightforward and make their points with minimum fuss. Several tracks solely feature brief samples of dialogue that my primary school French cannot decipher, but the word “terrorisme” provides an impressionistic flavour. I must apologise to the band for sounding dismissive of the samples, as their use is clearly filled with intent.

The sonic palette is synth heavy with few recognisably acoustic sources, and in these hands it feels like a consciously militant decision. Mourmansk150 demonstrate an uncompromising attitude and a healthy disdain for genre fads; and for that, we should be thankful. (*NOTE = this excellent was written by David Tonkin).

ACCORDING TO THE BAND  :   Formed in the North of France at the end of the 1990’s, Mourmansk150 is an abrasive and aggressive artistic project ranging from industrial music to power electronics via harsh medicine. The group’s cultural terrorism raised the stakes of artistic confrontation to new heights, combating all notions of commerciality and good taste with a maniacal fervour. Using screeching waves of feedback, tape loops, extremist anti-melodies and screamed, distorted, hateful and offensive lyrics, Mourmansk150 explores death, mutilation, power and degradation.

REVIEW   :  Album of the veteran french project "Mourmansk 150" which started its career in 1996. After all these years "Mourmansk-150" has recorded 30 long albums, 5 ep´s and 6 releases more in other formats. Most of these works alone but several were splits with bands such as: Agathocles, Fear Konstruktor, Muckrackers, Superfuckers and othes. A lot of years and a lot of albums, it´s logical their experience and high quality level when they make Noise and Industrial. This album is a little bit different of the rest by the fact there is no human voice recorded in any track. Usually they speak or scream but always there are "lyrics" or simple screams. Abouth the rhythmic section it happens something similar: there is not.  I think these facts become this album more strictly harsh noise and much more Industrial or Experimental. This one "Fight or become their slaves" was edited and distributed by the russian label "Spirals of Involution", veteran label specialized in Noise and derivates. Good work.

This project is active since 1996 and I think just this fact, is very important to mention in this review, due many noise projects not has more than 4 or 5 years. The style in this recording is as always, pure electronical noise with few and soft industrial rhythms and human voices, screams or speeches in almost all tracks.

After 4 years of its creation, MOURMANSK 150 recorded this little single with only 2 tracks and 10 minutes of music. Noise, Industrial and human voices with a sound specially dirty and junk. The label wich made and distribute the single changed the name and nowadays is called "Tavarn Keben"; the label distribute also grindcore and noisecore and you can see its catalogue HERE .
