Lavas Magmas is the longest running musical project by Luis Gonzalez. Started in 2008, LM has morphed substantially, but has always been inspired by the fragile webs that maintain our centrifugal reality, along with the lurking violence that bursts beneath our feet. Field recordings, contact mics, sound sculptures, junk metal, magnetic tape, electronic and acoustic instrumentation have all played important roles in LM compositions. Video is also a key element to LM, and often counterpoints the audio with visuals that change rapidly and morph in a rhythmic nausea. Luis Gonzalez is also a photographer, visual artist, and explorer of urban decay around the world.

I recently discovered a true gemm so far remained in the underground hidden as possible. This is the audio-visual artist named Luis Gonzalez, a young resident in northern USA (Portland city) and who I imagine he has some cultural origins in some Spanish-speaking country. I could find very little information about this artist but I can tell by his blog and discogs, that his musical career began in 2007 and he has recorded 14 releases in different formats: cd, cassette or mp3. Listening to his discography on Bandcamp and Youtube, we can see how Luis Gonzalez is not enclosed in a unique musical style but he is very open minded and interested in other musical genres. He has made recordings of harsh noise, industrial, ambient, drone, experimental, electronic and even synth-pop. Its main project is LAVAS MAGMAS but he has also had short lived b-side projects such as: Deterritory, Crooked Columns, Lifestyle Pornography, Recombinants, Avoid Avoiding, etc... some of these are still available on Bandcamp but other unfortunately are sold out. I personally choose this "Enexition" as my favorite of all his works to date. There are only 4 tracks in about 7 minutes each (more or less) but LAVAS MAGMAS manages to define his own style and to mix music like crude noise with very mild sub-genres such as ambient, drone, space or light structures reminiscent electronic music . The 4 tracks are quite similar to each other but the whole of the album is not bored at all, in opposite it is nice, harmonious and very calm. Apart music, the artist has also talent in make collages, paintings and visual mouting, specially beautiful his Dadaïst collages which you can see two examples here below. High quality work in all aspects no doubt.

I was very pleased with the purchase of the album "Enexition" and decided to also buy this print in July 2013. First of all to report that the physical edition (cassette) has another cover (which you can see just here below), but I just bought the mp3 format avaible in Bandcamp. Not all LAVAS MAGMAS recordings sound like this, but of course I personally prefer this quiet side of the musician, which mix a kind of soft abstract melodies, with some field recordings and kind of very slow, deep and crunchy noise. In fact, the own name of LAVAS MAGMAS is a kind of game with the spanish words: lava and magma, both elements born from the deep of the earth and cent per cent related with natural phenomenons, vulcanus, earthwakes or tectonic plates. So, we can say that the LAVAS MAGMAS "lyrical themes" turn always around nature and its manifestations, sometimes calm and quiet, but also sometimes violent and furious.
