JEFF SURAK is a veteran experimenter from Washington, DC. He began recording under the moniker "1348" in the early 1980s and participated in the hometaper underground. He released his music on his own label "Watergate Tapes" imprint along with other artists such as Kapotte Muziek, Odal, and collaborations with John Hudak, Crawling With Tarts, Zan Hoffman, Alexei Borisov and others. JEFF SURAK also performed and toured with his live unit "New Carrollton" creating improvised industrial soundscapes. Under the name of "1348" he recorded 9 full lenght albums and three splits, and how you can to listen to here, its style was completly harsh noise in the vein of the first old-school noise industrial projects. This "Corporate werks" has a sound specially lo-fi, crude and rude, and its only two long tracks (31 minutes each) show us many levels of intensity, crudeness and brutality. The sound that plays this cassette is the closest thing to being a foot away from a reactor of a plane. After "1348" and during early 90s JEFF SURAK spent most of his time living in Moscow (Russia), where he formed the noise group "Sovmestnoye Predpriyatiye" (Joint Venture), which did site specific performances. In the late 90s, JEFF SURAK returned to recording and live performance with the free music duo "V". After releasing numerous recordings and touring the USA, "V" disbanded and JEFF SURAKfocused on solo works under the name of "Violet", creating organic irrational compositions, using electro-acoustic instruments and tape/cd/vinyl manipulations and also creating sounds and music nearer to ambient and drone landscapes.
Currently JEFF SURAK performs under his own name, operating in the netherworld between composed and free improvised music, moving between musique concrète, drone, noise, ambient & free improvisation using whatever sound implements at hand. He has collaborated with such artists as Alexei Borisov, Zan Hoffman, Rinus Van Alebeek, Frans De Waard and Michael Gendreau. JEFF SURAK runs the excellent label "Zeromoon Records" and directs the annual "Sonic Circuits Festival of Experimental Music" in Washington (USA), presenting performances by a wide range of artists from Phil Niblock, Magma, Univers Zero, Merzbow, Faust, Odal, Andrea Parkins, David Behrman and hundreds of others. "Very much like watching a giant wildfire consuming nature or the eruptions of a volcanoe or seeing an avalanche go down, strikes you both with fear and awe, makes you stare straight into the eye of danger without being able to move a limb." ~ Cracked "Dark and mysterious, mixing in bits of Philip Jeck and Tim Hecker, Wolf Eyes, blending them into Violet's ominous world of sound." ~ Aquarius Records.
